The first thing that I would do is make sure that your gears are designed to do clutchless shifts. just be careful and think it through, you will get the hang of it(its easy once you think about how the gears work). I would not suggest doing it on an everyday street bike just because of the excess wear it applies to the transmission. It can be done and will probably save a few hudreths or maybe a tenth or two on the track. For downshifting you will need to open the throttle just slightly (to eliminate the deceleration in the drive line caused by the brakes) then kick down a gear and let out of the throttle. The way to do it is to accellerate the let out (usually almost completely), but only to the point of coasting as if in neutral( not decelerating) then kick the next gear, then reapply the throttle. the best way to think about it is for these gears to want to disengage from one gear and then engage the next on the fly, without nasty grinding noises, is for the gears to have no force on them(acceleration or deceleration). Unless you have some sixth sense on transmission speed this is hard to understand. To be able to shift without the clutch people will tell you that you must match revs to the transmission speed. The biggest thing that you must know to start shifting without the clutch is how a transmission works. Now what has been said about extra wear is correct, it will put more strees on the gears and wear them out faster(minimally). that is what atually drives the bike foward.īasically the transmissions in most modern sport bikes are designed to allow for clutchless shifting (both up and down) without causing any problems. Straight cut meaning that the gears are cut in a straight line so that the gears will mesh together easier(unlike the helicut gears in a car) andĭog meaning dog ingagement instead of syncros, in their there actually is probable about 4 posts on each side of each gear that engage in to slots cut into every other gear. Most motorcycle transsmissions are straight cut dog boxes Depending on what the transmission in your bike is you can do it with out any problems.
